Castiglione and the old railway
Discovering the eastern slope of Etna by mountain bike, to explore the small village of Castiglione di Sicilia along the route of the old CircumEtnea railway. Starting from the Bikepoint in Zafferana Etnea, the route climbs up on tarmac to Milo and Fornazzo, and then continues off-road to Linguaglossa.
From here, the cycle path along the old railway line begins as far as the town of Castiglione di Sicilia, a town full of history and legends: the castle is linked to many of them, but also the Basilian cube, and the so-called “cannizzu”, a watchtower that is said to have been split in two by a terrible bolt of lightning.
The town is situated at 621 metres above sea level, visually controlling a vast territory and dominating the Alcantara river with most of the valley of the same name.

Monte Intraleo – Rifugio Galvarina
A very hard route to discover the southern side of Etna. Departure from the Zafferana Etnea Bikepoint in the direction of Nicolosi. After crossing the Melia area, the dirt track begins until you reach Monte Intraleo. From here we enter the Altamontana track where we pass the Zampini refuge and ride along Monte Ruvolo to arrive at the Galvarina refuge.
The natural peculiarities of this itinerary are represented by the territory as a whole, which offers a very particular view of our volcano and an alternation of very varied landscapes.
From dense woods of larch pine, to birch trees, to fields of fescue, thorn and juniper, with the constant presence of the southwest flank of the volcano (often snow-covered even in late spring, when we recommend the excursion) and the central crater, often yellowed by sulphur concretions.
The natural features of this itinerary are represented by the territory as a whole, which offers a very particular view of our volcano and a very varied landscape.
The return trip is from the S.P. 92 passing in front of the Sapienza refuge and downhill to the Zafferana Etnea return.

Timpa Rossa – Monte Nero
A route to discover the north-east slope of Etna. Departure from Zafferana Etnea, crossing the Cerrita wood on the slopes of Etna, Monte Crisimo refuge, Zappinazzo, Lamponi cave, Timpa Rossa refuge, opposite Monte Nero crater born in 1646; arrival at Piano Provenzana and return to Zafferana.
